Information about the organisation
The foundation Alonso Quijano is a non-profit private and independent institution, the aim of which is to contribute with the integral development of the human being through the promotion of the cultural and educational initiatives, especially the ones which are orientated to the promotion of reading.
Goals
- Promotion of the individual and social habits of the reading, as well as the stimulation of the literary creation both in Spain and in the rest Spanish-speaking countries or with the Spanish speaking communities.
- Contribution to the best awareness and the oral and written usage of the Spanish language and to the disclosure of literary heritage of Spanish language.
- Promotion of the cultural, educative and artistic relations of Spain with other nationalities, with special attention to the European countries and to the Iberoamerican countries for the reasons of the tongue, history, and culture.
- Promotion and development of all kinds of cultural and educative initiatives, as well as of the investigation and study in such kind of fields.
- Realization of the activities of the formation of the professorship, educators and cultural promoters.
- Promotion of the solidarity between the citizens with the purpose of improving their living conditions.
- International cooperation to development.
Our main projects and activities
- Permanent campaign for the promotion of Reading with hospitalized children in the Mother and Child Hospital of Malaga. The project consists of the loan books to the hospitalized children.
- Spanish for immigrants. Personalized teaching of Spanish for adult immigrants residents in Malaga. Free particular classes are given by Spanish volunteers of our Foundation.
- Mini libraries Alonso Quijano. Installation of small libraries in centers or public places where people can read, take or exchange books freely.
- International Cooperation “Books for the World”. Sending books to the various countries of Iberoamerica
- Journal Mi Biblioteca. Quarterly publication in paper form with a national and international scope that proposes an informative and rigorous approach to the multiple slopes of the library sector.
- Photo contest “Reading times”. The objective is the promotion of plastic and artistic creativity in the scope of reading
- VG editions. Editorial stamp with the catalog of the university textbooks, books about reading, Spanish for foreigners and infantile literature.
Our motivation and volunteering experience
Our principal motivation is enrichment, that a foreign volunteer could contribute with its cultural and volunteer experiences exchange both in personal scope as in labor scope. We think that a volunteer also can enrich in its large experience of collaboration with our entity.
Everything in this cultural exchange will be both for volunteer and association members as the volunteer will do the same functions as other persons: classification and organization of the books, participation in the activities of our volunteers, organization of the materials and documentation. On the other hand, we want to give an opportunity to the European volunteer to become acquainted with our social and cultural environment.
Another important reasons are a support and help that lntercambia Youth organization offers in the process of the exchange of the volunteer.
What we offer to our volunteers
- Free Spanish language classes (Language and Culture), 1 ½ hour once or twice a week, given by a qualified volunteer, at an agreed time.
- Gain experience in useful skills for their professional future. The EVS provides skills and experiences, increases job possibilities and gives the chance of doing different works, so a choice is possible.
- Learn new skills. The EVS enables new challenges, know new people, new perspectives and ways of living which may encourage volunteers to reconsider their world perspectives.
- Secure and comfortable working environment, both in the hospital as in the Foundation; they both have all needed resources and both are secure.
We expect volunteers to participate in
- Volunteering in the Mother and Child Hospital of Malaga, in the project «Get better with books», Mondays and Thursdays, from 16:15 to 18:00. It consists of going to the rooms of the children and lend them books. Volunteers will be accompanied and guided by the responsible for volunteering.
- Support and collaboration in the Program «Spanish for immigrants». This takes place throughout the week. The volunteer will inform the students of the program, organize the material, and plan the class planning putting in relation students and teachers.
- Organization of digital and printed material (books, magazines, encyclopedias and varied documents that need classification.
- In the project «Books for the World», the Foundation receives constantly donations of books. The volunteer will select according to their usage, organize and classify them, as well as help with the packing and transport.
- Support with the regular update of the Foundation’s web site: management of e-mail, revision of texts and images of the website, the introduction of new contents and update of details.
- Collaboration with the project «Mini libraries Alonso Quijano»: selection and classification of donated books; elaboration of packs for the different libraries; setting up of mini-libraries; coordination, with the responsible people from the organization, to carry out monitoring of the use of the different mini-libraries.
- The volunteer will help with the everyday paperwork tasks in the Foundation, such as answering the phone, informing members and subscribers and helping with the billing system, sending the mail…
Volunteers will constantly be accompanied by some staff members and receive guidance and support for the activities carried out.
There are 3 people in charge of supervising different ESC activities.
C. Practical arrangements |

Working hours |
The volunteer’s regular schedule will be from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the morning, and sometimes from 3:45 PM to 6:00 PM in the afternoon. During the afternoon, the volunteer will either assist with the Spanish classes or participate in the «Get Better with Books» project, which involves hospitalized children. Occasionally, the volunteer may be required to help during the evening or on weekends for special events organized by the Foundation. Any changes to the regular schedule will be communicated in advance. |
Living Cost (food, cleaning, hygiene)

Volunteers could cook their meals on their own in their flats, they are going to receive 180 euros each month. |
Accommodation
|
Accommodation will be in rented flats shared with other ESC volunteers or other human beings. They will be provided with standard equipment and essential household goods and electricity, water, gas will be covered by the hosting organization. The Internet connection is not facilitated by the hosting/coordinating organization. Accommodation flat rules are written in this document. ● International Volunteer will have to make 300 euros Deposit that will be reimbursed once the project is ended and volunteer leave tidy,clean and with no damage in the private room and common areas (special conditions for Inclusion profiles) In country Volunteers will have option to book their accommodation and will get 250 euros per month for eating purpose 300 Euros Flat Deposit is required to Volunteer or Sending, that will be refundable in case the volunteers follows Flat Principles. • Young people with fewer opportunities [1] Certified by National, regional or Local Institutions will have different conditions |
Local transport |
Local transport will be provided for distance over 3 km from home to Project Place If transport is needed, Each volunteer will have a chance between BIKE or BUS CARD |

Language Course |
Online Language Support (OLS) is a service designed to help you improve the knowledge of the language you will be using to carry out the volunteering tasks, and you can use it also to learn other languages, with no restrictions concerning the number of courses and languages. You can access OLS with your EU login and join online courses already before your departure. The OLS is hosted on a learning management platform of the European Commission called EU Academy. If the working language or level is not covered by OLS or if you need additional assistance, your host organization can support your language learning through organizing formal or informal lessons. The format, duration and frequency will depend on your needs, the project tasks and the resources available to the organization.

Travel |
As per European Solidarity Corps program regulations, travel arrangements are limited to round trips between the volunteer’s home country and the project location, going and back, no other routes are possible Layovers exceeding 24 hours are not permitted. Volunteers may only check in one piece of luggage weighing up to 20 kg, in addition to a carry-on bag. Please note that transportation costs for musical instruments or pets, with the exception of guide dogs, are not covered by the program. Volunteers will prepay travel Tickets to arrive at the Project, and it will be reimbursed in 7 days after getting all the docs (invoice, boarding pass, tickets..) Insurance |
One key principle for all the activities carried out under the Corps is that volunteers must at all times be safe. You will be insured throughout your activity, either through the insurance provided by the European Commission (for cross-border activities) or through the national health system or private personal insurance (for in-country activities). For cross-border activities: a) If you are citizen or temporary resident of any EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway and if you will volunteer in one of those countries, before departure you must obtain the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) (free of charge). On top of the insurance provided by EHIC, you will receive complementary coverage – the insurance plan set up by the Euro- pean Commission and operated by the insurance provider Henner. b) If you are coming from or going to a country that does not support the European Health Insurance Card (EHC), you will receive primary coverage through the insurance plan set up by the European Commission and operated by Henner, but you should request and take a DOC from your Government sharing that you do not have access to EHC Before departure, please read Henner’s Guide to the insurance plan for the European Solidarity Corps volunteers carefully and learn about procedures, benefits and reimbursements included. You will receive the Guide in the welcome email sent by Henner indicating that you are registered and covered by the insurance. The Guide can also be found and downloaded in Henner’s website. [1] ESC GUIDE defines young people with fewer opportunities as those who are disadvantaged compared to their peers because they face one or more exclusionary factors and barriers, Disabilities, Health problems, Barriers linked to education and training systems, Social, Economical, Cultural Differences.
[2] At the end of your activity, you should complete a participant report. It is an online questionnaire that will be sent to you via e-mail and it should not take longer than 10 minutes to fill it in. The report is a chance to give feedback to the organization and National Agency and to help improve the pro- gramme for future participants. The report is also mandatory for issuing you a certificate of participation.
D. Expected learning outcomes |
– Through this project, the volunteer will develop strong communication skills, including social media management, creating promotional materials, and writing content. They will gain experience in project coordination, particularly in organizing cultural events and activities. The volunteer will also learn to manage time effectively, balancing multiple tasks and deadlines. Additionally, the project will help build teamwork, problem-solving, and organizational skills that are valuable for future work. – Our project aims to promote both learning and solidarity. It helps improve literacy by offering resources such as books and workshops, with volunteers directly involved in activities that foster education in underserved communities. Additionally, cultural workshops and events encourage the exchange of ideas and promote mutual understanding between diverse groups. – The project empowers volunteers by developing skills in teamwork, leadership, and communication, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to their communities. It also encourages social responsibility, supporting vulnerable groups like immigrants and children in hospitals, and creating networks of solidarity. Volunteers gain insight into social challenges and advocate for positive change in society. – A safe and comfortable environment is provided in both the hospital and the Foundation, with all necessary resources available and both spaces being secure

D1. Expected Activities |

The volunteer will help select based on their condition, organize and classify them, as well as help with the packing and transport – The volunteer will help with the everyday paperwork tasks in the Foundation, such asanswering the phone, informing members and subscribers and helping with the billing system, sending the mail or answering to whastapp. – The volunteer will help organize and will assist to events such as Reading, Book Day, and seminars at the university and online. Exemples of the events with the university of Malaga: University Conference on School Libraries and Promoting Reading, International Conference on Social Engagement and Libraries or International Congress on Reading and Writing (COILES) – The volunteer will help send out the Mi Biblioteca journal, a quarterly publication in print, with both national and international reach, providing an informative and accurate look at various aspects of the library sector. – The volunteer will have the opportunity to suggest activities that interest them, either within the foundation or elsewhere. In the past, we’ve had a monthly movie club, a reading club, workshops for children promoting reading, cultural workshops about their home country, book distrubution. The creativity is welcomed. – The volunteer will actively assist with the Foundation’s communication efforts, particularly through social media, helping with the creation of posters, and maintaining a presence on social media platforms in general. – Volunteers will constantly be accompanied by some staff member and receive guidanceand support for the activities carried out. |
E. FLAT RULES |
• 300 Euros Flat Deposit is required to Volunteer or Sending, that will be refundable in case the volunteers follows Flat Principles. o Young people with fewer opportunities Certified by National, regional or Local Institutions will have different conditions • Ensure that you switch off all the lights and electrical items and turn off the water when you leave the house every day; • Apartment can be checked with 2 days pre-notification to ensure that the house rules are being followed; • All rooms and equipment must be kept clean and tidy and any breakages must be reported immediately to the Coordinating Organization by mail: info@intercambia.org ; • Any damage caused to either the room or the common areas, furniture, electronic devices, kitchen staff… can be covered by ESC HENNER INSURANCE. ● In case HENNER does not accept, it will be paid for by the volunteer who is responsible for it. It will not be covered by OWNER, HOSTING or COORDINATING. • No smoking inside the flat and the building. You can smoke on the balcony if you have or outside the flat. • No loud noise before 8 am in the morning and after 11:45 pm in the evening. failure to abide by this rule may make the neighbors call the police, and report a punishment paid by people involved in the flat at that time. • Have respect for your flat mates and keep the common areas clean and tidy; • There is a maximum cost of water and electricity per month and per volunteer, estimated at 30 euros each person. If the real costs are over this rate, the additional sum will be covered by all the volunteers of the flat, as we cannot calculate each person’s consumption. In this budget, a maximum of two gas bottles a month are included. We kindly ask for cooperation in order to avoid conflict on this topic; • Animals are not permitted in the rented property without written agreement from the landlord; • The volunteer will inform the coordinating organization in writing as soon as possible about any damage or loss that requires a repair to be carried out; • Volunteers are required to leave the accommodation on the last day of their activity. The hosting or coordinating organization cannot guarantee free, paid or alternative accommodation beyond this date. • The coordinating organization deserves the right to move the volunteer to another flat in case if it is needed, he/she will be informed at least 15 days earlier; o If the volunteer loses a key to the flat, he/she needs to pay to make a new one. In the case of being robbed or losing the key, the change of the lock needs to be covered by the volunteer; • Each volunteer may have guests in the flat, but with the following conditions: – The other flatmates are notified and have accepted this; – The guests can stay no longer than a week and they need to follow the general flat rules; – There can only be one guest at a time. The rules for the volunteers who are living with Spanish families may be changedand adjusted by the members of the family. Next to these general rules you can also set your own internal rules (like room rotations, room access, music time , cleaning timetables…), however, we cannot take responsibility of them As a community, we all share responsibility for upholding the house rules. If any individual fails to comply with these rules, or if a violation is not reported, the entire household may have to face the consequences. Failure to abide these rules may result volunteers will have to pay one FULL MONTHLY FLAT RENT, (300 euros x Number of Rooms) according to the contract signed with the landlord Failure to abide by these rules repeatedly will result in the project termination..
